The Analytical Center for Climate and Environmental Change (ACCEC) is intended primarily as a research facility to support, expand, and add visibility to the important global climate and environmental change research already being conducted at NIU. Climate and environmental change issues are some of the most crucial problems that society is facing and will be facing well into the future. Analytical capabilities are unequivocally the key to our progress in understanding climate and environmental change, and the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences at NIU has contributed to this progress with world-class innovative research in three of the areas most sensitive to global change: (1) the behavior of polar ice sheets, (2) ocean regulation of climate, and (3) microbiological-geochemical interactions in natural and human-impacted environments on land. Moving this work forward in quantum steps and developing the next generation of cutting-edge scientists will require investment in the University's equipment base to capitalize on technical progress in designing sophisticated field and laboratory instrumentation. The development of these facilities should mean that ACCEC will serve not only the many NIU scientists and students who are working on these problems, but will also serve visiting researchers from elsewhere in Illinois, the U.S., and the world.
