In its early past, Jo Daviess County saw a great influx of people searching for promised wealth.  The largest city, Galena, was a booming mining town in the early 1800s after settlers learned of its mineral mining potential.  The town was named after its most abundant mineral source, lead sulfide, better known as Galena.  Even though commercial mines in the area have closed, the wealth associated with the industry is still very evident in the beautiful architecture of this charming area.  Today, much of the region remains rural and its "untouched" topography can be appreciated to the fullest extent.
