A Virtual Field Trip Through Northeastern Illinois

Purpose

This website has been created as a part of Geology 429, a field trip methods course in the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences at Northern Illinois University.  This website was constructed mainly for teachers and middle to high school students, but can easily be used by those interested in the history and geology of the Chicago area.  It is assumed that most users have the basic scientific knowledge obtained in several courses in earth science and geology.

Objectives

The goal of this website is to utilize several sites in the Chicago area to further the understanding of its users.  By utilizing the information in this website one should be able to successfully meet and perform the following objectives:

- define geologic terms
- retell the geologic history of Illinois
- summarize the recent glacial history of Illinois
- describe glacier characteristics and properties
- identify glacial deposits and landforms
- differentiate between glacial artifacts
- explain formation of glacial features
- argue reasoning for stream dechannelization
- describe examples of shoreline processes
- list geological engineering efforts to build and maintain shorelines
- discuss engineering effects of lacustrine and river modifications
- state the purpose of flow re-direction in the Chicago River
- summarize historical aspects of the Chicagoland area
