Preface

This page presents virtual field trips created by students enrolled in Northern Illinois University's GEOL 429 course. This course is taught in the Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences and is generally taken by students studying to be Geology, Earth Science or Physical Science teachers at the elementary, middle- or high-school grade levels. Students in GEOL 429 learn the geologic history of the upper Midwest, how to design and lead earth science field trips, create lesson plans and activities related to field trips, and practice using internet technology. As part of the course, groups of 2-4 students conduct the background research for a field trip, prepare a field trip guidebook, lead the class on the trip and prepare a virtual version of the trip and its guidebook.

The field trips are for teachers and students and anyone wishing to learn more about the natural history and environment of the northern Illinois region. For the benefit of teachers, each field trip includes suggestions for trip-related lesson plans, demonstrations or lateral-thinking exercises. Paper guidebooks for some field trips are available as PDF files that can be downloaded from each trip website.

The content of field trips on this site may vary dramatically. Some trips focus specifically on geology and geologic concepts whereas others more generally address the environment or human activities and their impact on the environment.
