Nachusa Grasslands Research Site

April at Nachusa Grasslands

Nachusa Grasslands is owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy and is open to the public for hiking, bird watching, and other naturalist activities that do not harm the natural landscape. Nachusa is approximately 1500 acres in size and contains never cultivated tallgrass prairie remnants, restored tallgrass prairie, and presently cultivated agricultural land used for corn (Zea mays) and soybean (Glycine max) production. This unique mix of vegetation and land use allows for a rare comparison of microbial-pedologic linkages. Iverson (1989) notes that less than 0.03% of the tallgrass prairie present at the time of European settlement remains today in Illinois.
