Image of yeast colony

This image on the main page, which is a link you may have selected to reach here, is of a colony of yeast. Yeast is not normally of interest geologically, and the picture was chosen for the design in part because it is much more attractive and aesthetically pleasing than those taken of bacteria. We also observe that this useful fungus has been employed for thousands of years in the making of two closely-related and fundamental foodstuffs, bread and beer, and that it therefore has been of immense significance in the history of mankind.
