This is graduate student Rebecca Reid ( now Cooper ) in the field, using a bailer in a well to get a sample of groundwater for analysis. The bit of pvc pipe standing up to the left of her is a piezometer, used in determining the elevation of the local groundwater surface. A map of groundwater surface elevations provides information about the direction of flow, and is a fundamental tool in the study of groundwater.
